I just wanted to make a post about how much I appreciate a single smile. The amount of dirty looks and rude words I hear around this school/ any school everyday is extremely pathetic. Receiving a smile is positive and comforting. I understand that people don't want to hold eye contact with a stranger because of the awkwardness or the fact that they simply do not care and have more important things to do. Receiving a singular smile from a friend, a stranger passing in the hall, or even a teacher is totally kind and mood lightening. But simply holding eye contact to give someone a smile can make a sad persons mood lighten, an angry person calm down.
Being in a school of 3000 people can make you feel totally invisible and unimportant, and eye contact and gestures between people can easily change that feeling for the better, by making you feel seen. Turning a bad mood/ bad vibes to good mood/ good vibes? Yes please. I personally try to smile at majority of people I make eye contact just because I know how good it feels to be treated with even a small amount of kindness to break away from all the harshness of the day. Even though I too am guilty of grazing over peoples eyes when I could make eye contact. Smiling is such a simple action. It's like, extremely easy. By simply moving some of the muscles in your face you can possibly make someones day. Personally, when I smile and get one back from anyone, it even makes me happy despite the fact that I started the exchange. So I encourage anyone who reads this post (Mr. Kemp) to engage yourself in an exchange of positivity with another human for their sake and yours.
